What a spectacular season we are in where blisteringly dry days are behind us, replaced with perfectly still afternoons where the wind is content to be still and observe, crisp mornings give way to balmy days and evenings, greening taking place all around us, the Karoo dust settled.

Welcome to the best season in the Great Karoo, an autonomous season acting independently from the heat and dry of summer, governing itself away from the icy cold of winter, operating without external control from self-superior spring, autumn is certainly holding her own.

This season has refreshed and rejuvenated us, we are filled with positivity and upbeat news.

The wild, blustery afternoons of summer are forgotten, currently the only blowing away is being done in mind by the perfect evenings calling for outdoor events under the stars.

We hosted just such event for a 65th birthday celebration and all was perfect, even the thunderstorm that loomed took one look at the idyllic setting and decided to move on and not ruin this magical moment.

Trading traditional Karoo dust sweeping for unconventional water sweeping has been a happy swap the last while. The 138mm received since beginning February already pips our annual average rainfall, for this achievement we are happy to partake in mopping up operations.

Together with the Karoo earth, we are thrilled!

Some autumn feel-good news - our laundry angel, sweet Beth, imparted her expertise to the PACT Hospitality Academy students helping them with tips and secrets to keep their whites white and crisp.

We gifted each student with Beth’s secret stain fighting weapon, a bar of Boerseep, our guesthouse linen’s absolute best friend.

Happy hospitality wishes to the beautiful group of enthusiastic students for an exciting year ahead, we know you will make Prince Albert proud!

The perfect season to host an outdoor wedding with a flashback to Meghan and Simon’s pre-reception canapés at Dennehof Karoo Guesthouse. Huge congrats Mr and Mrs Key and thank you for making us a part of your beautiful celebration.

We think our Grand Old Dame was the perfect hostess and witness to yet another special occasion to add to her almost 200 year history

Some more sparkling autumn news aligning with our ethos of treading lightly on our precious Karoo earth - we have given plastic the complete boot when it comes to still and sparkling water with a recent investment in a water dispenser and beautifully branded refillable glass bottles.

Slowly our green-goals finish line is creeping closer.

Autumn saw in a lot of good ‘chair’ with these newly acquired ‘chairful’ red and white striped cushions livening up all our communal seating spaces. One of our staff commented that every day at Dennehof Karoo Guesthouse is now like Valentines Day, our group of recent Swiss visitors were delighted we had put out cushions in honor of their country’s flag.

We will use this line to make future good first impressions on our Austrian, English, Canadian, Japanese, etc, etc, guests too!

Besides rain, good ‘chair’, and balmy evenings,  autumn also brought us Easter and here in the guesthouse kitchen we hopped to it and kept things playful and festive with the sweetest bunnies to make our guests’ day and stay.

Tis’ the season to bake perfect loaves and we love it!

Not too hot, not too cold, just right, our perfectly proofed beauties rise to the occasion unlike the sometimes flatbread-like heat of summer disasters and too-cold-to-react winter flops.

The baker is all for autumn! 

Dear Ferdinand, another soul enjoying the cooler afternoons and opportunity to dig for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Pot of gold still to be found, but one happy hound trying.

These past months have provided the most beautiful light shows, Mother Nature has put her best lighting expert in charge of backdrops, every afternoon being another beautiful, calm photo opportunity.

March to May must be our favorite time in the Great Karoo, perhaps time to book a visit and see if we tell truths.

As our citrus trees hang heavy with promise of winter fruit, we are eking out the last of the beautiful mangoes, figs, berries, and general cheerfulness on our breakfast fruit plates.

As the produce selection shifts we have a few more weeks of outdoor breakfasts left before autumn releases her grip and  winter drives us indoors.

Another reason to love autumn, she brings with her Journey to Jazz, the plump event cherry on top of this already perfect season.

If the January launch in the Swartberg Pass was a snippet to judge by, this year’s event is going to blow us away, figuratively rather than literally, thank you aforementioned wind that is now a calm observer after the frenetics of summer.

We hope to see you there and if you missed booking for this year’s event, we urge you to diarise for 2027.

Inspired by our German guests who often describe our guesthouse as ‘from the heart’ (‘es kommt vom Herzen’), we thought to take note of this unique compliment and ride the writing wave with all the heart and love we can dish up.

Certainly hefty heartfelt thanks to the team full of heart that give up precious time with their families during the festive season to keep the guesthouse gears grinding gracefully. We love our A-Team and are indebted to them for their constant good-nature and spirited hard work.

These owlets have absolutely stolen our hearts, three  downy fluff-puffs gracing the guesthouse grounds and keeping our guests enthralled. Looking at the image you might ask if we are mathematically challenged as only two are pictured - the newsletter scribe can certainly answer affirmative to being numerically backward, but to three she can count. The problem comes in when trying to get three owlets to pose perfectly above the Dennehof Karoo Guesthouse sign, firstly because owlets do not pose, and secondly because owlet number three is a bit of a loner.

Heart and soul went into getting four of our staff accredited with their NQF Level 4 in Service Excellence Training, firstly from the four who all scored 80% and higher, and secondly from the proprietors who spent a few weeks being put through their waitering paces. Proud of these four, and relieved we can hand the breakfast service back to the experts!

Our guests are loving recent upgrades in two of our guestroom bathrooms. Each fitting, each tile, each decor item chosen with heartfelt consideration to ensure guest comfort and pleasure is just so. Our Patio Room (pictured) and Wagon Shed Suite are receiving many compliments on their marvelous make overs, book one of these beautiful spaces to inspect our handiwork.

This semi-desert that is the Great Karoo has captured our hearts, and even while waiting for much needed rain there is always beauty to be found in the extreme dryness.

In contrast to the dry beauty that surrounds us, we have a few spots in the guesthouse gardens where we splurge on a little watering. What joy our Clivia patch delivers when in bloom!

We love peak hour traffic in Prince Albert, this scene playing out from the relaxing position of one of our pool deck loungers. Book your stay and observe traffic Karoo style.

So much love and heart in this image, our dear Ferdinand getting particularly festive this season. We had a similar image of Ella but her obvious dislike for silly festive headgear was made very clear - not an image we thought to add to our newsletter full of love and heart.

A weekend of love with Melissa and Dean who did some serious knot-tying in Prince Albert. We are always thankful for the spirit and heart that wedding parties bring to the Grand Old Dame and love that these happy occasions add to the already colourful and eventful history of our beautiful Dennehof Karoo Guesthouse.

On the topic of the Grand Old Dame, she too was shown much love with a brand new coat of paint. Jack and Moses spent almost a year with us covering every inch of her walls, roof, decks, and furniture items, ploughing through almost 600 liters of paint.

What is not to love and make your heart beat happily with summer scenes like this. Our grounds have many beautiful seating areas ideal for nights out on the deck sipping a glass of wine and taking in the nothingness of the Karoo accompanied by owl hoots, insect chirps and the gently gurgling lei water.

Some more wedding love as we hosted beautiful bride Laura and her dapper groom Oscar along with their family and friends. The love was tangible, the happiness infectious - wishing you a fabulous future together Mr & Mrs O, and we are holding you to your promise of return visits for anniversaries!

The season of freshness and rejuvenation is upon us and seems to have affected everyone’s psyche in the best possible way. Even the often tardy newsletter scribe is on best writing form heading for a deadline actually coinciding with the correct season, unlike previous poor performances.

There are numerous refreshes that took place in the months leading up to joyous spring. Besides the re-coat of every single wall and roof space, our online presence got a bit of a wand wave too.

Our website home page now dons the addition of a fabulous short film shot by the extraordinarily talented Lara Hamman of Quilted Films, we think she captured the essence of our Grand Old Dame just right.

Glass raises a plenty at another very successful Vino Camino Prince Albert. We were thrilled to have our favorite three producers back with us again, Jurie from Mondvol (with a chenin that raises the chenin bar through the roof), Jo from Hartenberg, and Peter from Peter Bayly Wines.

Besides fabulous wines, our sourdough toasties  surprised us with their popularity, one visitor leaving us a 5/5 Google review with the words “...the best toasted ham, cheese, pickle sandwich in the world ...”, we are finished!

This beautiful seating alcove is finally getting evening love again now that fireside ensconcing days are few and far between.

Hoi P’loy string lights thoughtfully placed to enhance Karoo wonderland evenings, definately nothing hoi polloi going on here!

As we take breakfast back out doors, we have the perfect dish to mark the shift - try our famous pancake stack with Gay’s Dairy Bulgarian Plain Yoghurt, seasonal berries and fruit, roasted pecans, a drizzle of honey, and whichever decorative edible flowers the garden gives out, this dish is positively dreamy, and Instagrammable to boot!

As we rejoice in the change of season, we  spare a moment’s thought and gratitude for the wished away months which gave us such sweet citrus bounty. We will miss the zested, sliced, stewed and juiced variations of these beautiful winter fruits, but the hint of a return is there as we currently revel in the aromas of their blossoms filling the guesthouse garden’s air.

Room refreshes and renewals were on our winter to-do list, Wagon Shed Suite and Patio Room both getting bathroom makeovers, upgraded touches like returning painted doors to their former wooden glory, furniture updates, and a bit of soothing Karoo calm brought back to formerly stark white areas.

A bit of glass-raising to these two who celebrated their 2nd and 52nd birthdays in the mid-winter month of June. They might have chosen the coldest time to see in another year of life, but the constant ‘spring’ in their step belies their birth month.

Not to be forgotten, dear Ferdinand celebrated his fourth birthday in July but seems to be turning into a serious old man who does not partake in the frivolities of photo shoots.

There is no better way to prelude the promise of spring than with love and all things wedding. Huge congrats Mr and Mrs Meiring, thank you for sharing your your knot-tying weekend with us and adding another special piece to our Grand Old Dame’s history.

Our luscious sourdough loaves are currently in a happy climes space and giving us perfect rise - in the apt words of Goldilocks, not too hot, not too cold, just right! Thank you spring, the baker will miss you when sweltering summer sets in.

‘Spring’ in every sense of the word - leave it to exuberant Ella to rise to the occasion, jump for joy, and give us the perfect image to sum up our current spring-time mood.

Not to be outdone by all the beautiful spring blossoms, our Blou Alwyn plants decided to put on a little flaming side act while the fruit trees steal the fragrance show.

Also the perfect scene to make mention of Prince Albert Open Gardens happening 4 & 5 October when a selection of our most beautiful gardens will once again open their gates, showcasing sustainable spaces that are indigenous, water-wise, and wildlife friendly. The weekend will be jam-packed with all things natural, organic, green, and inspiring. Besides our unique Great Karoo gardens, a host of talks, walks, book launches, and workshops will be sure to enlighten and enthrall.

Welcome to our combo newsletter, a smattering of Autumn Oracles mixed with a whirl of Winter Words.

The newsletter scribe is once again admin challenged and running behind schedule, taking the escape route by killing two newsletters with one keyboard, apologies for her tardiness.

As we head into the season(s) of fireside evenings, soulful soups, warm coats, and more, it is coats that sets the scene for this newsletter - after all, coats come in many shapes, sizes, and variations, and we have been known to coat things thick for good newsletter reading.

Number six on Trip Advisor’s Best B&Bs & Inns in Africa, we are humbled and thrilled to be up from number nine in 2024!

This might not have anything to do with coats, but it has left us feeling warm and fuzzy … and ‘gloats’ rhymes with ‘coats’ so this blurb is therefore fully acceptable.

Thank you to our wonderful guests who have left all the glowing reviews that elevated us to sixth position, we will keep slipping those R100 notes under the breakfast plates to maintain our spot in the rankings.

On the topic of gloating,the company we keep is inspirational and we are coated in pride and beyond honored to be featured in Inside Guide’s The Hotlist 2025 Top 10 Weekend Getaways amongst greats such as Emily Moon River Lodge and Strandloper Ocean Boutique Hotel to mention a few.

Thank you our hardworking team and the ever fabulous Inside Guide for this wonderful accolade.

Speaking of the hardworking team, here we are, all coated in sunshine and smiles and being supervised by our furry-coated Chief Liaison Officers, Ella and Ferdinand … definitely supervised, not being stared at manipulatively for hidden snacks to ensure attendance in the Dennehof Karoo Guesthouse team photo.

Moving away from gloating and back to coating, our Grand Old Dame is in the process of receiving a shiny new coat to enshroud her in time for winter. Her walls are now whiter than white, the roof, railings, and window trim a dapper charcoal, and splashes of cherry red chairs and gates ensure a cheerful and whimsical guest welcome.

Our famous breakfast menu has received two new additions in the form of Turkish Eggs Dennehof style (or Turkish Delight as Rentia, our sous chef, renamed them), as well as our beloved sourdough toasties now becoming a permanent feature.

No singing praises or sugar-coating required, proof is in the pudding, er, breakfast, come taste for yourself!

Faking summer on one of the coldest weekends we have had so far, dedicated influencer, Jéanne’s Adventures, was left wishing for her coat.

Luckily a heated sauna was on standby to warm her up between takes, we appreciate her coat-less dedication at getting the shot and adding glamour to our already picturesque swimming space.

Following on from the coldest weekend mentioned above, the weather suddenly played turn-coat and pledged allegiance with summer. Jumping at the chance we eked out the last few breakfasts on the deck before winter once again regained her grip and forced set-up back into the glass conservatory, definitely not a bad alternative in our view.

Another happy ‘hanging his and hers coats on one hook’ occasion as we hosted Marné and his merry groomsmen. Pictured above in the furry coat is dear Ella, doing the final check on groomsman grooming.

As winter sets in, coat yourself in the health and warmth of our little sauna pod - it worked for Jéanne the influencer, it will work its influence on you too, and because the well-being of our guests is priority, cold water plunges thrown in as an added bonus!

Mr Shiny Coat Ferdinand enjoying koppie walks in the sun and always keeping an ear open to the latest happenings in town. Our fair weather boy is going to struggle through the next few months, poor chap!

Our Seville harvest yielded small sized citrus this year, but our marvelous marmalade still hits the spot when coated over our homemade sourdough bread making the start of the day an extra happy event.

A good dusting of jazz coated our beautiful little town yet again early May, jazzy notes warming visitors’ ears, hearts and souls to the extent that our rooms are already fully booked for next year’s event. Definitely worth putting an early reminder in your calendar to book, Journey to Jazz is growing from strength to strength.

How beautiful when the Karoo is coated in golden light and rainbows. To experience your piece of heaven, book your stay with us today, although cold, winters in the Karoo are magical!

As bubbly corks fly like popcorn in celebration of a new year, it seems the perfect time to reflect on what has been and what is to come.

Over 5700 guests have passed through our doors since we became the custodians of Dennehof Karoo Guesthouse in May 2021. That is a staggering number of names and faces to remember, and an even more staggering 11 400 eggs we have poached, scrambled, fried and boiled over the past 48 months, not to mention the almost 200kg of coffee beans that have been ground and brewed, and the almost 800 sourdough loaves that have been lovingly baked!

Thank you to all our guests for helping us achieve these staggering numbers, we look forward to the next 5700 faces to include many returning and new ones.

Wishing you all the happiest New Year, may 2025 be filled with terrific travels and awesome adventures!

Speaking of staggering numbers, the past year saw almost 200mm of manna from heaven make their way into our rain gauge and surrounding Karoo earth, even giving our Grand Old Dame something to reflect on and in. This is in happy contradiction to the 138mm annual average.

All the ‘staggeringness’ would not have been possible without these wonderful souls, our super duper Team Dennehof. As our occupancy figures have increased by 25% since take-over, our team has grown and are working harder than ever to keep the Dennehof Karoo Guesthouse quality and cleanliness flag flying high.

Biscuit production line is in full swing, the oven is working overtime during peak season, our oat and cranberry welcome biscuits are as popular as ever. At a quick calculation, we have sent out about 6500 of these heavenly bites.

With all the talk of increased occupancy, thousands of breakfast eggs, rigorous room turn-around, and countless feet passing through our doors, we fortunately still have breathers where we can just sit, be, and savour the beauty around us.

PS: as reflections is one of our newsletter themes, we thought it apt to point out the Grand Old Dame once again doing her reflecting in the conservatory glass.

The above mentioned numbers do not happen by chance. Every business needs a calm, level-headed captain at the helm with an endless job description: guest liaison, head of maintenance, financial brain, barista, human resources, sommelier, nice guy.

We think we caught us a pretty good all-rounder, thank you Albert!

We often wonder how many mice our resident owl has processed in the last 48 months, if only he could talk. Thank you for all the hoots and guest entertainment, Dr Who!

Finally flourishing after many years of nurturing, our Karoo quadrant garden is showing happiness after the abundant rains. We also like to think our tender loving care had something to with the beautiful display we now get to behold.

These two never tire of welcoming and entertaining   guests and having rambunctious play time with each other.

We would be fascinated to survey the number of visitors who book at Dennehof Karoo Guesthouse just to experience the antics of Ella and Ferdinand, the galumphing (as stated by the Wall Street Journal Off Duty Travel article) Ridgebacks.

Our pool is certainly not Olympic size, but has definitely cooled and refreshed many travel-weary guests arriving on hot Karoo days. The background sauna maybe more sought-after in winter months, but also a great guest draw-card.

The proud baker (or ‘sourdough sister’ as Accidental Baker recently declared) showing off six of the above-mentioned 800 loaves. As challenging as it is baking in these extreme Karoo temperatures, we enthusiastically keep churning out these delicious labours of love.

Another activity done in great quantities, but we promise over many, many years and all for the sake of keeping our pot plants looking pretty and keeping the moisture in the soil. Here’s to 2025 being a year of more cork collecting, for the sake of our plants of course!

We do like to keep evolving and changing our room decor for when the 5700 guests return to give them  new and interesting things to discover.

When we cut back the ‘kooigoed’, of course we must rescue the off cuts for bunches of Karoo-style decor.

The Khoikhoi used the leaves and flowers as bedding, hence the name ‘kooigoed’ translating to ‘bedding stuff’ - we are happy we can still bring this character-full Karoo plant back into the bedroom in a different form.

To end, the view of our favourite drive in the Karoo, the road to Weltevrede Fig Farm.

We encourage every one of guests to experience this magical wonderland, the cherry, er, fig on top being the incredible oasis at the end of the 26km drive where mouth watering fig tarts and fresh figs beckon.

Currently we are feeling cheated and disorientated with the thermostat showing 37 degrees celsius one day, and 16 degrees celsius the next. As we pendulum between scorching summer highs and arctic winter lows we ask ourselves what happened to the moderate, happy in-between climes of gentle spring. Is it permissible that Mother Nature withholds a season entirely, leaving the forlorn feeling of one whose ice cream falls in the sand at the beach?

We guess Mother Nature can do what Mother Nature wants, so best we get over the somewhat unsatisfying gritty ice cream taste in our mouths and make the best of what we do have between melting moods and icy inclinations.

Inclement weather aside, read on for all our happy experiences and discoveries the last few months.

And oh, if anyone does know where to find Spring, please send her Prince Albert way, we would not mind her pleasant company for the next month or so that she still owes us!

Confusing seasons ignored, the arrival of this little parcel from the US of A had us feeling warm and fuzzy.

Now proudly displayed in our reception area as a reminder to strive towards staying the Tripadvisor Best of the Best and ninth best B&B in Africa.

Another beautiful surprise came in the form of this fantastic feature on Dennehof Karoo Guesthouse in the spring edition (you see, everyone knows it should be spring) of Lééf magazine. Thank you the talented Jeani Johnson for weaving our story together with your wonderful words.

The foreground of this image is evident of spring, the background tells a more wintry story. As much as we lament the fact that our favourite season has skipped a beat in Prince Albert this year, we can not deny that visually everything was beautiful, even if we enjoyed said beauty wrapped up in jackets and beanies.

August welcomed the inaugural Vino Camino Prince Albert, and what a wine’ing success it was.

Wine and sunshine (almost spring-like) was the order of the day, and we were honoured to host Heleen of Hartenberg Wine Estate, Jurie of Mondvol Wyn, and Peter, our neighbour from across the Swartberg Mountain, of Peter Bayly Wines. Thank you the three of you for adding extra finesse to our space with your beautiful offerings of happiness, we look forward to more of the same next year.

We had to throw in an image of our beautiful almond blossoms - even if we can not have spring in reality, we can recreate it with visuals!

Local artist Erika van Zyl hosted one of her plein-air workshops to coincide with the first week of spring. Day 1 saw artists bringing a creative energy to our peaceful guesthouse gardens accompanied by relatively warm weather, followed by the next few days of painting in severe winds and storms - spring, we think not!

Not sure if it was to coincide with the season of renewal, growth, warmth, and all things flowering, but we were pleased our Blou Alwyne decided to show off their orange blooms for the first time since we planted them three years ago - definitely worth the wait!

These two fair-weather hounds have been happy regardless the temperature. Too hot, there is the coolth of the air conditioning, too cold, there is the warmth of the heater - what, us worry?!

Another beautiful bride to coincide with new beginnings and all things blossoming.

Although it was a freezing mid-September day, we could not complain about the beauty of it all. We are starting to get the distinct impression Mother Nature is having us on!

A wintry sky offsetting a cheerful foreground. How beautiful is our little red gate which leads guests to the comfortable cosiness of our conservatory breakfast, normally reserved for winter seatings but having been pushed out into whatever season we currently find ourselves in.

If spring does not come to you, create it artificially. We love the new touches of spring-like happiness in our Forge room. Even the quirk of the somewhat skew pictures gives a certain amount of playfulness that our normally perfectionist tendencies can let slide … just this once.

The past few weeks saw us use the very last of our homegrown winter citrus to give our guests their breakfast Vitamin C boost in a glass. Albert’s squeezing arm will now take a rest for a few months, while many blossoms on said citrus trees create promise of more juicy opportunities for next year.

A few last Karoo blooms to spread the illusion of spring. Thank you for making it to the end of our skipped spring season gripes.

Today is definitely the perfect day to be tapping out winter words - the Swartberg Mountains have just experienced a light dusting of snow, the wind is blustering, and the temperatures have plummeted.

Yes please to some finger keyboard aerobics fireside.

Having said that, the Karoo really does become a winter wonderland, beauty waiting to be discovered in every scene for those willing to brave the chill. The cloud art is inspiring, the light conjuring up beautiful shadows and patterns, the air crisp, clean, and good for the soul.

Dear Princess Ella recently turned one, and 12 months into her young life she is still as boisterous and entertaining as ever, keeping us smiling and completely in love with her beautiful Bambi features.

Treading lightly on our earth, we keep evolving innovative ways to lessen our environmental impact ensuring a feel-good guest experience:

A large sigh of relief was audible other side of the Swartberg Pass when this project was finally completed. After two years of struggle with architects, the Heritage Committee, and builders, we finally have a free-standing powder room.

We almost think its prettiness was worth the wait!

As stated previously, what we love about winter - the clouds, the crispness, the light, the shadows … and then returning to our nice warm beds next to the fireplace …

… and then of course there is the snow show, snow cold, but snow pretty.

We so love seeing our beautiful mountains dusted in this icy icing powder.

Cheering up winter is our freshly painted Massey Ferguson red farm gate, definitely a feature putting smiles on new arrival’s faces.

We are so thrilled by our permanent source of entertainment in town.

The Showroom Theatre is offering a wide variety of live entertainment most weekends: from classical music to rock, to stand up comedy, cabaret, and serious theatre, there is something for everyone.

Of course classic movie night Wednesdays is also a must with old favourites like Casablanca, Amélie, Cinema Paradiso, amongst others, all being brought to our art deco big screen.

Following on from the above, Prince Albert is proud and excited to present The Swartberg Music Salon.

This new and unique chamber music festival will take place from 2 – 4 August and is set to add to this little town’s growing number of musical accolades. Don’t delay, book today!

The Britannica Dictionary definition of the word ORACLE: “a person who has a lot of knowledge about something and whose opinions and advice are highly valued”.

Based on the above, we can only describe The Wall Street Journal, together with Tripadvisor, as perfect examples of oracles, The Wall Street Journal for naming Prince Albert as one of the coolest towns in South Africa with Dennehof Karoo Guesthouse being their suggested accommodation choice, and Tripadvisor for ranking us as ninth best B&B in Africa for 2024, two positions up from last year.

The conduit oracles have spoken, but of course it is you, our dear guests, that are the uber-oracles that make these accolades possible, thank you, thank you, thank you for all your positive feedback and reviews!

It never rains in the Karoo, the oracle said. A long table under the stars for a 50th birthday celebration will be beautiful, the oracle said. Beautiful it was, dry it was not.

As the heavens opened, guests huddled under the veranda to watch our Riel Dancers kick gravel instead of dust-turned-to-mud. Spirits certainly weren’t dampened quite as much as the table setting and oracles’ ego, just a quick change of plan resulting in a 50th celebration blessed by rain, love, and laughter.

Our guest liaison officer, King Ferdinand, and his 2IC, Princess Ella, are still earning their keep, er, snacks, by doing their utmost to welcome and charm guests. Little Ella is on the up and not so little anymore, dear Ferdinand is now getting a bit of pay back for all the rough tumbles he gifted his friend. The oracle has determined justice.

We had the honour and privilege of hosting these two beautiful souls, Professor Thuli Madonsela (an oracle in every sense of the word) and her colleague Diane Gahiza. Every now and again a human angel lands amongst us spreading serenity and peace, this was one such moment.

The last few months were certainly not all awesome oracles and guesthouse happiness. February saw the Prince Albert region being hit by a ten day power outage sent to test the strongest of characters in soaring temperatures. Besides AC, we proudly managed to keep the lights (and ovens) on, powered purely by the sun, these six perfect loaves testament to the fact that off-grid is the way of the future.

Another beautiful wedding at Dennehof Karoo Guesthouse. This time the aforementioned weather oracle had it right and a beautiful long table under the stars remained dry and occupied.

Oh, the blooming beauty we have in our backyard!

Early 2024 saw visitors travel from far and wide to take in this spectacular riot of Watsonia colour up on the Swartberg Pass, a display not seen as glorious in over 30 years. The oracle seems to declare this year to be the one of spectacular nature.

Then quite literally in our backyard, look at these stunning Spekboom flowers not seen all that often as during a severe drought, the plant will reserve its energy to increase its chance of survival. Looks like the oracle crier that was wrong about it never raining in the Karoo must most certainly eat his or her words!

Here we are, tapping out the words bang on time for our Karoo Summer Scrawlings, round of applause please for the end of newsletter writing tardiness of past!

As this year culminates in a slightly cooler Karoo crescendo, we are temperature-grateful to have escaped the inferno that confronted us last year this time.

As we keep a cool head, it is perhaps the perfect time to reflect back on the year that was, a year filled with challenges and highlights, new additions, new adventures, and new experiences. Read on to share our reflections.

Reflecting on this Grand Old Dame, without whom nothing in this newsletter would be sensical. Standing (thank goodness) proud since 1835, it is only befitting that this glamorous gal has national monument status, and oh if these walls could talk …

We must also reflect  on some of the things we love about Prince Albert, the ‘Rieldans’ is high up on the list. The talent in our beautiful town is unriel (see what we did there), so happy that these age old traditions are kept alive and (dust) kicking.

How could we not reflect on these two, dear Princess Ella and King Ferdinand, especially when they remind us of their presence often and comically. Our Guests love them, many book with us just to come meet them, the sweetest ‘ridgies’ you ever did meet!

Also reflecting on how we could not survive without this super hero team behind us. Grateful to have these beautiful faces and kind souls make up Team Dennehof, their honesty, integrity, and loyalty humbles us time and time again.

Harvest reflections, and looking back at the generous bounty the guesthouse gardens have delivered. Winter citrus to include our marmalade Sevilles, lemons, limes, breakfast-juice oranges; summer fruits of pomegranates, stone fruit, figs, as well as all the herbs to make our in-house breakfast chef’s heart happy!

Reflecting on more things we love: we love cheese, we love wine. We have an award-winning dairy as our neighbour, we have our very own internationally qualified sommelier, so why not marry the two loves and give our guests the perfect cheese and wine pairing experience in the old barn at Gay’s Guernsey Dairy.

Love reflections and another beautiful wedding took place at Dennehof Karoo Guesthouse early November. Huge congrats Mr and Mrs Brand, may our Karoo oasis always hold a special place in your hearts.

The Showroom Theater has dusted its seats, swept the stage, switched on the spotlights, and thrown open the doors; how happy we all are that song and dance and movies return to to this iconic space, and what better way to add pomp and circumstance to the grand opening than with the Kyle Shepherd Trio.

Dr Who and his missus, Who Too, have also been busy reflecting on love as is evident by their two owlets spotted (as is correct for a Spotted Eagle Owl) having a hoot around the Dennehof Karoo Guesthouse grounds.

Sundowner reflections with the lovely ladies of Table Memories who joined us for a Foodie Experience Weekend in October. Nothing quite like watching a Karoo sunset in the middle of the open veld, of course with hydration and sustenance on hand.
